HIU Sets up its First Confucius Institute Overseas in Haiti

On May 31, 2019, at Confucius Institute Headquarters (known as Hanban) in Beijing, an agreement signing ceremony was held between HIU and University of Quisqueya in Haiti.  

The agreement was jointly signed by three parties including Hanban on Cooperative Development of Confucius Institute in the University of Quisqueya, Haiti.

The ceremony was attended by Monsieur Jacky Lumarque, President of University of Quisqueya and President Liu Ying and Vice President Sui Jun from HIU.

This Confucius Institute is the first of its kind established in Haiti.

This Confucius Institute serves local needs by training students with multiple skills, who can combine Chinese language skills with relevant vocational techniques.

The establishment of this Confucius Institute plays a vital role in spreading Chinese language and cultures in the Caribbean region and in the whole world. This opens a new chapter in the field of inter-school cooperation, boosts exchanges and promotes friendship between the two countries.


Established in 1988, located in its capital city of Port of Prince, the University of Quisqueya ranks No. 1 among private universities in Haiti. As a high quality higher learning provider, Quisqueya University also specializes in fine chemical research. Its global links with tens of countries include Canada, USA and France.


Back in January 1997 and in February 1998, China and Haiti set up their respective Business and Trade Development Offices in both capital cities.


With a population of 12 million people, Haiti covers an area of 27, 800 square kilometers. Its official languages are French and Creole.
